Monday October 10 - The flight to Paris

After packing three days early, an old and honored custom in Monika's family, we decided to completely repack everything the morning we left, which in turn honored the last-minute scurrying about that was traditional in my family. Monika repacked her suitcase into two smaller wheelies, and I repacked my suitcase into her slightly smaller one. It was rather like musical chairs except we were tossing clothes between suitcases while waiting for our taxi to the airport. The sensibleness of this activity can certainly be questioned, but that plus some last minute errands kept us busy for the entire morning, which in turn kept us from getting nervous, and that was a blessing. In fact, we had just turned off the water and power in the house when the airport shuttle arrived at the front door.

Since I was well-scrubbed, dressed in clean, unwrinkled clothes, and had remembered to pack my Swiss Army knife in my suitcase rather than carrying it in my pocket, this time I had no problems at the security screening gates. Traveling used to be simple, but nowadays I have a hard time remembering which items have to go where. The laptop computer, for example, has to go in carry on luggage and cannot be in checked luggage, whereas any tool of any kind has to go in checked luggage and cannot be in carry on luggage. But as a result of minding my Ps and Qs, we got through security quickly and I had the time to begin the journal while we were waiting for our plane to depart. As it turned out, our Air France flight left Dulles 5 minutes early, which is a pretty rare event, and with the help of some strong tailwinds we also arrived in Paris the next morning still ahead of schedule.
