Wanderung 3

Rocky Mountain Ramble

May - July 2003

July 20th - Michigan City, Michigan

The boys were up quite early—they were clomping (quietly of course) down the stairs with their pillows in hand, with the intent of having a pillow fight in their clubhouse area over the garage. One of the girls sleeping in the clubhouse for the night had the bright idea of telling them to go ask their parents for permission. As a result they clomped back into the house and got the rest of us up for the day.

We talked and nibbled on leftovers while Gigi fixed a big Sunday brunch for all of us. At the end of the brunch we even had a “100th birthday” cake for our mom—Lois and Phyllis and I blew out the candles and I sliced up pieces for everyone for desert. Then we watched a video I had of my mother telling stories from her early days—she had a rather unique childhood on a small farm in Michigan attending a 1-room school. During her childhood she went to school in winter by a horse-drawn sleigh, and by the end of her life she was jetting around the country to visit her far-flung family. Can you imagine that? She lived thru two world wars, the Depression, and lord knows how many political administrations, and on the whole had a grand old time. Lois had also brought videos including one of her 90th birthday party and we also watched those for a while. By this time it was early afternoon and Monika and I left while the other folks were heading back down to the beach for another afternoon swim. We managed to get to Toledo by around 6 p.m. where we had a quick dinner and turned in for the night by 7.
