April 6-8th, 2013:Dallas and Quanah, Texas

We began our Great American Road Trip by driving our new Prius through the Appalachian Mountains and across the southern Midwest to Dallas, Texas.

In Dallas we came into a blaze of color. The color came from Beth’s beautiful quilts, which were displayed all around her house. One of her quilts won the 1st place prize at the Texas State Fair, and we think her quilts are quite artistic and pretty. Fortunately we also had a chance to see Carrie and Carson, Beth's daughter and son, while we were there for the weekend and check what was going on in their lives.

From Dallas we drove northwest in the direction of Amarillo. Along the way we visited Quanah, Texas, a town named after the last great Comanche chief. We spent some time simply wandering around the historic section and visiting the local museum, which was chock full of exhibits. I was vaguely disturbed to see a manual typewriter, exactly like the one I have at home, and an electric adding machine, exactly like the one I used in my first graduate statistics class, sitting there among the exhibits. (They're not old!) But in general the exhibits were a walk down memory lane for us.
